Guides to Canada's major cities

Each city works a little differently. Learn how to get around, what to see, and what newcomers should know before they arrive.

Travelling between cities

  • Canada is very large. Toronto to Vancouver is about a 4.5 to 5 hour flight, and the country spans six time zones.
  • VIA Rail runs passenger trains across the country. The busiest route links Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City.
  • Intercity buses connect many cities and towns. Companies and routes differ by province, so compare options before you book.
  • Driving in winter needs care. Quebec requires winter tires from December 1 to March 15, and British Columbia requires them on many highways from October 1 to April 30.
  • Book trains and flights early for holidays such as Christmas, Canada Day (July 1) and long weekends, when prices rise.
